Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS): Part 1

Let’s Start with The Basics

Technology is truly an incredible thing. It doesn’t just make doing certain tasks easier, but it can improve the safety of these tasks as well. Take driving for example. One of the most basic aspects of driving is staying in the lane. For those of us with older vehicles, we use our God-given eyes and the brightly painted white or yellow lines on the paved roads we drive. Most newer vehicles, however, have a little something called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) built in.

What is ADAS and why was it developed?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance System. The research behind this technology was in response to the overwhelming number of collisions that are caused by accidental road departures. These types of crashes cause injuries and fatalities that can be prevented, or at least reduced, with the invention of a Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system that does just that – warns the driver when they are leaving their lane unexpectedly. It sounds simple, but every second counts in these instances.

How does Lane Departure Warning work?

In one word: cameras. In more than one word: forward-facing cameras are typically mounted on the windshield near the rearview mirror. These cameras are then capable of monitoring lane markings and with a set of parameters, can alert the driver via an audible signal, a dashboard indicator, or sometimes even via vibration of the driver’s seat or steering wheel.

So, now you know the basics of Advanced Driver Assistance System. We will be getting into more detail about the types, history, and limitations of ADAS and why calibration is so dang important for this technology to work properly as it was designed and to keep your loved ones safe.
