Windshields & Weather: The HEAT! 🔥

We have certainly had a cold spell here in Arizona and recently talked about how cold weather affects windshields. And although it’s not quite Summer yet here in Arizona, we know that once Spring hits, the Summer heat and scorching temps are right behind. While the sun may be shining and the temperature rising, hot weather can also have a negative impact on your vehicle, specifically your windshield. Read below for the top TWO issues with hot weather and your windshieldAnd some solutions to those issues too! 😉

Issue 1:  Heat and Auto Glass. ☀️

One of the biggest issues with hot weather and your windshield is the potential for damage to occur due to the expansion and contraction of the glass. When the temperature rises, the auto glass in your windshield expands, putting extra stress on the edges and potentially causing chips or cracks to form.

Issue 2: UV Rays. 🌅

Another issue with hot weather and your windshield is the potential for damage to occur due to the sun’s rays. The sun’s UV rays can cause the plastic in your windshield to become brittle and more susceptible to cracking or breaking.

Solution 1: Protection. 🅿️

To protect your windshield from damage caused by hot weather, it’s important to park your vehicle in a shaded areawhen possible. This can help to reduce the amount of expansion and contraction the glass experiences, as well as reducing the amount of UV rays that reach your windshield.

Solution 2: Be Proactive. 🚘

The best defense is taking the offensive position. What does this mean? Simply put, the better condition your windshield is in, the better your windshield will hold up to changes in temperature. Practically speaking, being diligent with general windshield maintenance is important. This includes how to appropriately defog your windshield, caring for your windshield wiper fluid, and how to safely remove decals from your windshield.

It’s also important to have any chips or cracks in your windshield repaired as soon as possible. Even small chips and cracks can quickly turn into larger ones when exposed to hot weather. So, addressing these “small” issues quickly will be instrumental to preventing further windshield damage.

Another simple way to be proactive in protecting your windshield is to have your windshield checked before you leave on a road trip to make sure it’s in good condition. Not only is this a good general practice to take when it comes to caring for your windshield, but it can help ensure that you’re able to safely enjoy your trip without worrying about your windshield.
